Why self hosted Wordpress is better than Blogger

Many of the professional bloggers prefer self hosted Wordpress blogs over Blogger. What is the driving force behind such a move? Let's see top 9 reasons why self hosted Wordpress blogs are better than Blogger. Please note that this article is discussing about hosting a Wordpress blog on your own/rented server space and not on wordpress.com.

1. Complete control over content

You own the space, you own the domain name and you are writing the content. You have complete ownership on the material you produce and share. If your hosting company decides to cancel your account for inappropriate content/ideas, you are free to move on to next host.

Note: You can take backup copies of Blogger blogs too and can be imported on to a self hosted website at any time.

2. URLs

Many of the bloggers prefer to customize and make decisions on how their URLs should be like. On Wordpress, the complete control of URLs are right on your finger tips. You can decide on the URL pattern, style and even length.

Note: If you are not too much concerned about URLs, Blogger is already doing a decent job on the URL department and is suitable for SEO and for general readability.

3. Status symbol

Some people see Wordpress as a status symbol. Many of the geek bloggers out there switch to a hosted Wordpress platform just for this reason. For example: All phones are supposed to be made for one reason: to make phone calls. However, there are people who consider multiple features, cool factor, brand name, cost, popularity, etc. before choosing one. That rule is applicable here too.

4. Customization

The Wordpress source code is just there with you on your side. There are countless number of addons available for doing pretty much almost everything a blogging platform should do. You can customize the PHP, HTML, Javascript and CSS components as you wish to make it a perfect fit for you.

Note: Blogger also is open to customization. If you are ready to get your hands dirty with HTML Template editor, you can do magics. Even though it won't be able to offer the high level of customization like Wordpress does.

5. Search Engine Optimization

There are many Wordpress addons available out there which can help you make the site more search engine friendly. They can help you to maintain a particular length while writing posts, keeping keyword density to the sweet level, put pictures with alt tags etc.

Note: It does not means that Blogger is bad for SEO. Blogger is Google's own child and the effect of that is visible on the web.

6. Tons of templates and designs to choose from

If you wish to have that eye candy website of your taste, Wordpress is the best solution. There many free and premium templates available on the Internet. If you want a unique design, you can go ahead and design your own template or can get it done by hired professionals in the field. This includes making content accessible, making the website look neat and fit on all devices like computers, tablets and mobile phones.

Note: Blogger is also gifted with lots of built in templates and plethora of free and premium templates. However third party templates of Blogger is known to have bad impacts on the blog due to hidden links. It is hard to get developers who design Blogger templates. However, if you are ready to get your hands dirty, you can customize Blogger blog according to your taste. For example, Bbroy.com is using a self developed responsive web design.

7. Extra features

Wants to have a discussion board, voting system, chat application or a photo gallery built on to your blog? Then Wordpress is the perfect choice there. With lots of addons, which can be installed with few clicks your blog will be always open for incorporating features in future.

8. Languages

Wordpress supports more than 100 different languages at the moment of writing this article while Blogger only supports half of it. Since you have complete control over the server and application, you can customize Wordpress to make it suitable with lots more languages too.

8. Static pages

On Wordpress, you can create as many static web pages as you want. However, Blogger allows only a few static pages.

9. Blogs with multiple authors/ team blogs

Wordpress can handle multiple users with different permission levels and is very much suited for team blogs. Blogger allows multiple users, but they are only two choices for permissions: Administrator and non-administrator.
