List of official Ubuntu variants

Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux distribution today. There are many other Linux distributions available on the Internet which are based on Ubuntu. This list focuses on Linux distributions that are distributed by Canonical along with Ubuntu. Almost all of these distributions are compatible with each other in terms of applications compatibility, package management etc. However, they are designed and distributed for different purposes and platforms.

1. Edubuntu
An Ubuntu variant specifically designed for class rooms. Software packed with the distribution are targeted for students. It can also be used as starting point for users aged  6-18.

2. Kubuntu
Kubuntu is same as Ubuntu but making use of KDE Plasma Desktop of Unity graphical environment.

3. Lubuntu
Lubuntu uses LXDE instead of Unity and is more light and resource efficient.


4. Mythbuntu
Mythbuntu is an Ubuntu variant for home theater PCs. MythTV Media Center software is integrated into Mythbuntu and thus makes it a fine solution for media center computers.

5. Ubuntu for Android
Ubuntu for Android is an official project from Canonical to run Ubuntu on Android devices

6. Ubuntu JeOS
JeOS aka Just enough OS, is an Ubuntu variant for virtualization applications.

7. Ubuntu Touch
An Ubuntu variant designed for phones and tablets.

8. Ubuntu Netbook Edition
Ubuntu variant optimized for Net books

9. Ubuntu Server Edition
An official Ubuntu variant for servers.

10. Ubuntu Studio
Ubuntu Studio is a platform for multimedia processing including video, audio, pictures creation and editing.

11. Ubuntu TV
Ubuntu TV is a distribution for living room TVs with remote control.

12. Xubuntu
Xubuntu uses XFCE instead of Unity and is more light and resource efficient.
